A 23-year old Malaysian student who arrived from the United States on Monday was tested positive for Influenza A (H1N1), making him the third confirmed case here since the worldwide outbreak.
The student has been admitted at the Tuanku Jaafar Hospital in Seremban.
The outbreak was first detected here on May 15 when a 21-year-old Malaysian student who flew home from Newark, US, tested positive for the virus and was warded at Hospital Sungai Buloh.
His friend, who had met him upon his return, also tested positive for the flu and was warded at Penang Hospital. Both were subsequently treated and given a clean bill of health.
As for the new case, Director-General of Health Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said, the student who arrived on board a Malaysia Airlines flight MH091 showed no symptoms of the disease when he passed through the thermal scanners at the airport.
However, when he started having fever and cough on Wednesday, the family decided to take him to hospital in Seremban and tests later confirmed that he had the Influenza A (H1N1).
“His condition is stable,” said Dr Ismail, who praised the student’s family for taking him to hospital immediately.
“Their cooperation had helped us track down 14 others who came in contact with the boy. They are now under ‘home quarantine’,” he said, adding that 10 are family members while the others include a medical officer who came in contact with the student at the health clinic.
Dr Ismail said investigations revealed there were 279 passengers including cabin crew members on board the flight which landed at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport about 7.15am on Monday.
“We are now trying to contact them so that they can seek immediate medical help if they have symptoms of the disease,” he said.
They can also contact the ministry at 603-88810200 or 603-88810300 for help.
On Wednesday, the ministry received 24 case notifications of passengers who arrived here having flu-like symptoms. They were isolated at five hospitals nationwide for treatment and observation.
So far, he said, 411 people who arrived in Malaysia from countries reporting the Influenza A (H1N1) have been hospitalised and of the number only three were found positive.
